Behind the Scenes: What It Actually Takes to Run Crazy Crystal Shop

People see the finished product—a polished crystal necklace, a curated pop-up table, a clean Instagram post—and assume it just kind of… happened. It didn’t. There’s a whole world behind every piece we put out, and I want to pull the curtain back a little so you can see what goes into this.

SOURCING: RESEARCH FIRST, PURCHASE SECOND

Every crystal in our inventory starts with research. Before I buy anything, I’m analyzing cost, comparing pricing across multiple suppliers, and evaluating overall value. This isn’t impulse purchasing—it’s intentional decision-making. I weigh out all of my options and sources collectively, looking at quality, origin, pricing, and whether that supplier aligns with the same values and standards we preach. If I can’t verify where a stone comes from or how it was sourced, I’m not selling it. Period.

This approach is what allows us to price our products at rates that are actually accessible. By doing the work on the front end—finding budget-friendly sources that don’t compromise on quality or ethics—we can pass that value on to our customers without cutting corners. That’s a non-negotiable for us.

When product arrives, every single piece gets inspected carefully. I check for cracks, color consistency, structural integrity, and overall quality. Not every stone makes the cut. The ones that meet our standard move forward—either as standalone crystals or get carefully turned into polished, finished products, whether that’s a display piece or a form of jewelry. The ones that don’t? They get set aside. I’d rather have a smaller inventory than sell something I wouldn’t personally want to own.

THE MAKING: ONE OF A KIND, EVERY TIME

Our jewelry is handcrafted, and I mean that literally. I’m the one wrapping wire, setting stones, and testing every clasp. But here’s the thing about working with natural crystals—no two are the same. Each stone has its own unique shape and form, which means each piece requires the same level of individualness in how it’s designed and built. You can’t use a template when the crystal itself is one of a kind.

Sometimes the design comes together on the first try. Other times, we tweak it, make small changes, or completely scrap the build and start the process all over again. That’s the reality of handmade work. We maintain a standard, and if a piece doesn’t meet it, it doesn’t ship. Every piece that leaves our hands is made to last.

And it’s not just the crystals—we apply the same standard to every material we use. Our necklace chains, wiring for wire-wrapped pieces, and hardware are all non-tarnishable materials: stainless steel, surgical steel, or 925 sterling silver. We’re not using cheap metals that turn green in a week. When you buy from us, you’re getting something built with intention from start to finish.

THE JUGGLE: SCHOOL, WORK, FAMILY, AND EVERYTHING ELSE

Here’s the part nobody romanticizes. I’m a full-time student at Cal State LA, I work at Starbucks, and I run this business. On top of that, I help take care of my family—I assist my dad and support my mom, who has a disability. That’s not something I talk about often, but it’s part of the picture. It’s part of why I work the way I do.

That means some nights I’m wrapping jewelry after a closing shift. Some mornings I’m answering customer emails before class. Weekends aren’t days off—they’re when the most creative work happens because that’s when I finally have a few uninterrupted hours.

I’m not saying this for sympathy. I’m saying it because I want you to know what’s behind this brand. When you buy from Crazy Crystal Shop, you’re not supporting a faceless corporation. You’re supporting a first-generation college student who takes care of his family, built this thing from nothing, and keeps showing up for it every single day.

STONES & SIPS: SAME STANDARDS, NEW VENTURE

If you’ve been following us, you’ve probably seen Stones & Sips—our sister beverage venture that operates as a pop-up alongside the crystal shop. This wasn’t a random pivot. I have years of experience in barista positions and deep knowledge of the coffee and tea drink industry. It’s one of the two main things I’ve poured myself into over the past three to four years since our disappearance from the scene. I figured: why not combine the two things I genuinely love doing?

And just like the jewelry, everything about Stones & Sips is built on the same values and standards. The ingredient sourcing, the cost analysis, the pricing strategy, the quality control—it’s the exact same process. I research brands, compare per-serving costs, vet suppliers, and only go with products I can stand behind. Same beliefs. Same intentionality. Same refusal to cut corners.

At its core, both sides of this brand exist for the same reason: to combat the toxic narratives within our community and to assist people in any way I can. Whether you’re holding a crystal or holding a drink, you’re getting something made with care, transparency, and purpose.

POP-UPS: WHERE IT ALL COMES TOGETHER

Our pop-up events are where the full vision comes to life. Setting up a table with curated inventory, signage, a cohesive aesthetic, and a full drink menu takes hours of prep. But it’s worth every minute, because pop-ups are where we connect face-to-face with the community.

The conversations people have when they’re holding a crystal for the first time, asking what it means, sharing why they were drawn to it—that’s the whole point. That’s why this business exists. Not to be the biggest. Not to go viral. To be real, to be present, and to give people something they can trust.

THE HONEST TRUTH

Running a small business is hard. Running one while in school, working another job, and taking care of family is harder. But I wouldn’t trade it. Every piece that leaves my hands—every drink that crosses the counter—carries intention, craftsmanship, and a piece of the story I just told you. And that’s something no big-box retailer can replicate.

Thanks for being here and for caring about the process, not just the product.
